Flickr’s Explore page highlights a rotating array of about 500 photos each day, giving members a chance to discover inspiring work and connect with photographers around the world.
Photos are selected by an internal algorithm that considers factors like:
- Interestingness: Signals of engagement such as comments, faves, and views.
- Activity: Participation in the Flickr community, such as groups and trending tags.
If your photo is featured in Explore, you’ll receive a congratulatory comment from the official Flickr account.
Explore takeovers
In addition to the daily Explore, the Flickr team curates monthly Explore Takeovers to celebrate themes and Flickr’s diverse communities.
Past takeovers have highlighted:
- Black photographers and Black history
- Women photographers and women’s history
- Polaroid Week and Inktober
- Environmental and Earth photography
Takeovers happen on the last Thursday of every month. To get a preview of upcoming themes, join the Flickr Social group
FAQs
Do I have to be popular to appear in Explore?
No. Explore highlights photos based on engagement quality, not follower count. Authentic interactions — comments, faves, and views — matter most.
Do I need to be a Pro member to be featured?
No. All members have an equal chance of being featured.
Why do some photos with fewer interactions appear in Explore?
The images featured in Explore aren’t necessarily the ones with the most views, faves, or comments. Our system looks more at the quality of interactions than the quantity. For example, a meaningful comment may weigh more than multiple quick faves. The timing of your post can also influence whether it appears in Explore.
Is there a limit on how often a member can be featured?
Yes. To keep Explore fresh, limits are in place so the same members don’t appear too frequently.
Does posting daily increase my chances?
Posting regularly helps keep your audience engaged, but the real focus should be on building genuine connections.
Do tags, titles, and descriptions help?
Yes. More metadata helps the system understand your photo and can improve chances of being featured.
Does adding my photo to groups help?
Yes. Adding photos to on-topic groups fosters community interaction, which boosts visibility.
I haven’t been featured in Explore yet. What can I do to increase my exposure?
Explore is just one of many ways to be discovered. You can:
- Add your photos to the Flickr Social group for a chance to be promoted on Flickr’s official channels. We also curate thematic galleries on specific topics.
- Watch the first episode of Flickr FAQs for tips on building an audience.
